Understanding the increasing impact humans have on aquatic environments

Nuclear discharge contributes to the warming of coastal environments. Nuclear reactors are found along coastlines because they require water for steam generation and cooling. The water used for cooling is later released but at a higher temperature. Discharging heated water into marine ecosystems sets up a thermal gradient that can throw the system off balance, and destroy the species that survive there.
